Humaira Riaz Schools is committed to Sustainability Developments Goals 2030 and is constantly contributing towards aiding communities as well as ensuring that our students are also aware and focused on these goals.
In 2022, the school worked with The Global Schools Mentors to ensure that their lesson planning and content was taught in a manner which reinforced the above mentioned goals ensuring awareness of a need for a better planet amongst all students.
Going a step beyond the school also wants to impact its community and environment through the following projects:
Clean Water Initiatives
Pakistan has the world’s fifth biggest population and is rapidly urbanizing, which makes reaching everyone with basic services extremely challenging.
Despite impressive progress, more than 21 million people still have no choice but to drink dirty water, and one in three people don’t have a decent toilet. (source: WaterAid Global)
Given the severe situation in the country, Humaira Riaz Schools has aided in putting up two water purification plants. This clean water initiative gives over 20,000 people access to clean water.
Humaira Riaz Schools is focused on providing 5 more villages with clean water by 2030.
Tree Plantation
While trees are pretty and wonderful to look at, their importance stems far beyond beauty. The value and purpose of trees is enormous; and their existence is vital for the survival of humanity.
The number of trees per capita in the world is 422 while in Pakistan it is only 5 and there is a lot of catching up to do. Lahore, once known as the city of gardens, has rapidly lost urban green spaces to accommodate the swelling population. Such plantation drives will maintain groundwater table, improve air quality and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change.
Humaira Riaz Schools in partnership with Immi Garments Pvt Ltd planted 10,000 trees in 2023 and 3,000 trees in 2022. This is done in order to teach the children the significance of our planet and to also play our part in making our planet sustainable.
Health Camps
Students and community members within the school neighborhood is an impoverished community with lack of access to adequate health care. Due to malnutrition and unhygienic living circumstances the community is at risk of disease and other ailments. Therefore, we have partnered with Avicenna Hospital who graciously conduct health camps at the school premises free of cost for the students and the community.
Till date we have conducted general health and dental camps on the school premises with the plan to conduct a Women's Health Camp for the community.
Recycling Initiatives
Humaira Riaz School takes immense pleasure in all its recycling initiatives whereby Children collect recyclable trash from their community and bring it to school once a week, where they send the garbage for recycling and compost making.
Children not only have learnt how to make their own compost but are also equipped in making recycled paper. The school gets all the waste paper delivered from Immi Garments Pvt Ltd which is recycled by the students and is used for their own consumption. The school is buying no paper for artwork and is solely using recycled paper.
The children are also using this as craftworks allowing for beautiful handcrafted paper which the school will start selling to support some of the extremely impoverished families in the community.
Solar Power
Given the school's ongoing commitment to sustainability, the school has invested in solar power in 2023. The entire consumption of power as of today is now on Solar Energy.
Furthermore, we are working with Allied Energy to provide solar powered lights and fans to all the school children who do not have access to power.
