On August 12, 2024 Humaira Riaz Schools joined hands with IMMI Garments Pvt. Ltd. for its successful Project Plant-IT, where 15,000 trees were planted at Babu Sabu Interchange, Lahore. The project coincided with the 77th Independence Day of Pakistan with the aim to create a cleaner, greener Pakistan. The activity was conducted along with the Parks and Horticulture Authorities (PHA), Pakistan. It was a part of the school’s overall commitment to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in every aspect.
Not only was the drive aiming to counter the impacts of the recent environmental challenges posed by high carbon emissions and deforestation, it was also highly crucial in terms of team-building and community arrangement. Project Plant-IT included volunteers from IMMI Garments along with teachers and students from Humaira Riaz Schools, and government employees.
The activity generated strong emotions along with a sense of communal ownership of the environment.
The children enjoyed themselves immensely while learning the importance of tree plantation and environment sustainability.
Project Plant-IT covered a number of UN’s SDG including:
#11: Sustainable Cities and Communities | For which the project was aligned with the federal government’s tree plantation project to encourage sustainable and green cities.
#13: Climate Action | For which 15,000 trees were planted next to the motorway to combat vehicle emissions and address the need for clean air.
#15: Life on Land | For which 15,000 trees were planted, aiming at restoring the depleting ecosystem, and attempting to reverse land degradation.
#17: Partnership for the Goals | For which IMMI partnered with the PHA and Humaira Riaz schools. |
With an average tree’s absorption of approximately 25kg CO2 per year, Plant-IT will lead to the absorption of approximately 375,000 kg of CO2 annually. Although the impact is large, this is not the end of our efforts, nor is this a one-time event. Humaira Riaz is continuously dedicated to sustainability with a range of measures in place including clean energy generation though our solar energy initiative (SDG #7), installment of water filtration plants (SDG #6), quality education (SDG #4) and more. We are continuously committed to making Pakistan – and the world at large – a cleaner and safe ecosystem for all inhabitants.
